This book looks like a good read.

‘From style wilderness to height of cool, taxidermy has staged an extraordinary comeback. No longer confined to stately homes, stuffed animals are appearing everywhere from modern apartments to luxury department stores. High-profile artists have rejuvenated the medium and museums have dusted down their historic collections and put them back on display. Illustrated with stunning photography that explores this rich artform, past and present, this title is the most comprehensive and beautiful survey of taxidermy ever produced.’

Taxidermy by Alexis Turner contains the world’s greatest examples of taxidermy; from contemporary apartments and rarely seen private interiors, to luxury fashion shoots, museums and galleries. Also included are examples of a contemporary artwork including pieces by Kate MccGwire, Polly Morgan, Charles Avery, Tessa Farmer and Claire Morgan. Published by Thames & Hudson it is available to pre-order now.

Ice Age Art

I visited the Ice Age Art exhibition at the British Museum and didn’t know really what to expect. But I came away awe-inspired,  it’s hard to comprehend the fact that you have just seen the oldest art work in the world, Lion Man at 40,000 years old, found in a cave in Germany, he stands 29.6 cm high and is made of mammoth ivory.   Striking is the fact that the objects in the exhibition are so small, hand carved and would have taken hundreds of hours to complete.  Lion Man took 420 hours to carve.  These artists must have had patience, dedication and made the time to produce these beautifully carved objects.   Particularly striking were the swimming reindeer, full of vitality and life.

Working towards degree show ….

Where has the time gone?  The last three years have flown, now it’s all talk of the degree show and who knows what the future holds for fifty one fine art students.    It’ll be the last degree show to be held in Greestone Building up in the quirky Cathedral Quarter before the Fine Art department moves to the main university campus in the summer.   I’m sure we will be giving it a proper send off.  The opening night is Friday 31st May and everybody is welcome (more details to follow).
